The Great Depression was the deepest and longest worldwide economic depression that took place during the 1930s. Citizens were hungry, cold, unemployed and in search of shelter they couldn't afford, and everybody was affected in one way or another.
The Great Depression had direct and indirect causes that led to the severity it reached. The direct cause was the 1929 stock market crash. The Toronto Stock exchange lost $1 million/minute and companies lost up to 50% of their value.
The indirect cause were issues of the 1920s. In the 1920s over consumption was a huge issue. During the 1920s people would by more using store credits, and then when the time came to pay them, people were unable to pay and the store couldn't collect their debts.
During this time thousands of people lost their jobs, and attitudes towards this wasn't positive.
The government did try to fix this with "solutions" such as relief camps. The goal of relief camps was to provide shelter and food for unemployed men, but very quickly the camps got overcrowded and there wasn't enough food, and the conditions became very poor.
They also tried governments cuts and limit imports but once again this didn't work as there was now less money in the economy.
Current P.M of Canada, R.B Bennett tried to help citizens on a personal level, and although a lot of people blame him for the Depression he spent large amounts of money trying to help.
Although he did try, he had no good ideas and this resulted in a population that was hoping and praying for food, shelter and the safety of their friends and family.
